My current, eloquent train of though is "Holy shit it's a gundam! It's a gundam guys! Look at how small the people are! It's life sized, shit guys! This is awesome! It's a gundam!"

...Obviously I need to go to sleep. haha Thank you for providing something happy to look at after a sleepless night of grading papers.

Oh noes!  You mustn't cry out 'It's a Gundam!'  It's bad luck!  Ever notice how many people say that right before they're cut down by a beam weapon? x_x

Quick, throw some pictures of naked pilots around to distract (or attract >_>) any incoming ones!

^o^

I guess that's like wearing a red shirt in a Star Trek episode. Good point. XD haha

Yes, nudie pictures/pin-ups are sure to distract them!

*siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

Wonder if they could be convinced to build a Deathscythe?

^_____^

I see it at 0300, doing that shiver/shrug thing to settle all its bits and pieces, then powering up and taking a stroll through the area. Just a little bit of recon. Just in case. ^_____^

luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 15th, 2009 05:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
I am a bad, bad Deathscythe fan for not thinking of that myself. XD; They could even put a life-sized Duo beside it, or at least put Toshihiko Seki in the cockpit and have him scream threatening things at us about how everybody who sees a gundam must die. XD;

Couldn't we just have that sound clip of Heero and Duo having sex playing instead? *_* (maybe minus the relena part...)
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 15th, 2009 11:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
What is this magical sound clip you speak of? *_*

(You know, the funny thing is that Heero's voice actor has recorded BL drama cds too, so finding clips of someone who sounds suspiciously like Heero moaning in a sexy manner isn't all that improbable.)

Um... THE RESULT MIGHT LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAHAHA >XD

I'd go visit that Gundam.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 16th, 2009 04:34 am (UTC) (Link)
Hmm, where was I surfing when I found that link...?

*digs around a bit* Ah, here's where I found it.  There's a link to a place to download it in the comments.

I was trying to figure out whether the clip was just doctored GW sound clips or if the seiyuu got together to make it just for the fangirls.  I know they've both done BL things, so it's possible they would make it, but I also know it wouldn't be that difficult to find clips of the guys panting and moaning in their cockpits (heh) or something.  But I'm pretty sure I hear Duo saying aishiteru there near the beginning, and I'm pretty sure he never said anything like that in the series.  Then again, I suppose it could have been lifted from something else he's done.

Failing that, the only other thing I could think of to verify its authenticity would be to study the waveforms for repeating patterns or something, but I don't think I'm enough of a perv to turn it up and listen to it over and over again.  Or at least, I wouldn't want my neighbor to think I was that much of a perv. ^^

Gee, my Heero obviously gets his over-analytical streak from somewhere... -_-''

I'd visit that Gundam because it'd probably mean there were a couple of pilots making happy in that cockpit... ^_^
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 17th, 2009 03:52 am (UTC) (Link)
Okay, first of all, I died of laughter at that. It's... so very, very cheesy. They also sound like they're in pain a lot of the time, so I don't know. XD;;

The last bit with Relena and the gun shots is obviously put together. That clip is lifted right out of the series. Now, as for the panting and the other dialog, both voice actors did record BL drama cds, so all someone would have to do is lift the respective tracks from said cds and mix them together. Duo's dialog mainly consists of "Heero!", which he says plenty during the actual series. And... well, it's BL, they say "aishiteru" all the time. XD; Heero's little speech on killing Relena came right out of the series too, though with some modifications to make it sound more out of breath. And... the "korosu" sounds like it's the same sound clip whenever he says it.

With the magic of headphones you too can listen to perverted audio tracks AND analyze them without sounding like a complete pervert! ; )

Thank you for sharing by the way. XD I guess if someone felt the need to animate something like this, they'd have the audio ready for it now. haha
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 17th, 2009 06:22 am (UTC) (Link)
I love the fact that there's this dorky music playing in the background, too. ^o^

What's passingly funny as well is that listening to it, particularly the Relena part, reminds me what crappy sound quality GW had. ^o^ Granted Relena's bit was supposed to sound like it was coming over an answering machine (so amused that they have such archaic-sounding ringtones =D), but I have the DVDs, and it's always been pretty sucky to me that the English track was remastered in 5.1 (so they claim), while the Japanese track was left in 2.0. >_<

Actually, looking back on it, I have to admit that GW had pretty low production quality all around.  And not even just compared to current standards. ^^
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 18th, 2009 05:50 am (UTC) (Link)
They re-released a remastered version of Gundam Wing in Japan. The covers of the DVDs are beautiful too, as each Gundam pilot is drawn in Alfons Mucha's art noveau style (or a close approximation thereof).
I possibly have a torrent of it downloaded, since the files are much nicer quality than I remember GW looking like when I first watched it, but I'm not sure.

What's encouraging is that the production quality got better as the episodes went on. I am rather fond of the animation after episode 40 or so.
And at least it wasn't "Violinist of Hammeln"? That show wins for "worst production quality ever seen in anime". I don't think Weiss Kreuz was even as bad as that one was.

What always breaks my heart is knowing that due to production-schedule mayhem, they cut out the pilots' back stories out of the episode list. We were supposed to see Episode Zero animated. I have a strong urge to go to animation school just so I can go back and fix that oversight. haha
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 19th, 2009 10:30 pm (UTC) (Link)
What's funny is someone just linked me to the torrents for the remastered GW release. =) And I was thinking, it is what it is, only now it's up-rezzed.  It's just the same thing, now with four times the pixels.  Not like we're suddenly not going to see the same shot of Heavyarms shooting the same things down over and over, or that stock shot of Wing coming out and posing for the camera with that light over his head. =D

I only ever watched the first four eps of Weiss Kreuz.  Mostly because they had the first intro episode, and then immediately started whipping out all of the tragic backstories, as if that was the only thing they had going for them.  Didn't exactly bode well for the rest of the series. ^o^

I'm sure we could gather enough fangirls to provide funding for your animation studies. *_*

The weird thing about the EpZero manga is that, at least in Duo's case, it's not what we all think it is.  All we have for him is the Maxwell Church stuff, but it's from other sources that we hear about Solo.
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 20th, 2009 05:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love that scene in Endless Waltz, where Duo recognizes Trowa by his fighting style in the mecha. Except that Trowa isn't doing anything but standing there with his guns pointed at Duo, shooting at him. XD; Why, what a distinctive fighting style you have there Trowa.

I only saw a few episodes of it as well. Mostly due to my friends swearing on how awesome it was. (Needless to say, it wasn't. XD;) They had one of the main characters "sneak up" on a random bad guy. The shot was from the waist-up, and his stalking looked like he was standing on a skateboard, and someone was pulling at it to get him across the screen. It was so very, very bad.
However, when you consider that it's just one guy who paid for the whole thing, it could have been worse I guess.

But fangirls love overblown, melodramatic angst! Don't you know this?! Weiss Kreuz = Angst Assasins. :D;;

Last summer I taught art camp, and we had a claymation unit. I had this ambition of making a little GW claymation clip during my lunch breaks, but... the kids got to my Duo figure before I could stop them. They have him a mustache... and a red tie and some sunglasses. >__>;; He ended up looking like a pimp...

I spent years trying to hunt down that Solo reference. For the longest time I thought Solo was a mass-hallucination, because NOTHING referenced him (except for that one, vague sentence in an EpZero side-blurb). Finally I traced it to one of the Endless Waltz novels. And then I translated it. This made taking three years worth of Japanese classes worth it.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 23rd, 2009 12:24 am (UTC) (Link)
If only Trowa had run out of bullets while fighting Duo during that EW scene, then it would have been understandable for Duo to have figured it out. ^o^

The only thing that ever attracted me to WK was the whole 'florists by day, assassins by night' idea.  We need more 'mild-mannered ___ by day, gundam pilots by night!' stories out there. ^o^

I always ponder whether or not it's worth my time to make a GW boy dating sim or something. =D I guess I should be glad I'm not motivated enough to buy the Flash developer suite.

I started poking around GW fic before I had finished watching the series, and for a while, I wondered if Hilde was a mass hallucination. ^^
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 23rd, 2009 03:38 am (UTC) (Link)
Trowa? Run out of bullets? NEVER! Considering how often that happens to him in-series, it wouldn't have been much of a stretch. And WHO ELSE do we know who just stands there and shoots at things as a valid "fighting style"? He could have at least done another somersault or something. haha

Yeah, I agree. The florist premise cracked me up to no end. And I DO have a weakness for assassin-types. (Stealth is sexy. ♥)

DON'T SAY YOU'RE THINKING OF MAKING A DATING SIM! Please don't! You know, I've been resisting making one for a good year now. And the worst part is that the programing software is free, and I can do all the drawing myself, so I don't have any valid excuses not to. D: The last thing I need is someone out there crazy enough to agree with me.
Wait! But maybe if I get you to make one, my craving to see hilarious GW dating sims will be satisfied and I won't have to do one anymore. *stipples fingers in a sinister manner* Why yes. You should totally make a GW dating sim. Go make one now!
(But seriously, the merits of visual novels are starting to look more and more appealing as an alternative to writing fic. >_>)

Considering how little Hilde gets mentioned in fic, I'm surprised you even got to that point. XD; I still wonder though where Solo got blond hair from. Everybody always writes him as such, and THAT I have seen no evidence of in the novel...
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 23rd, 2009 06:41 am (UTC) (Link)
I love Wing, and I love Heero, but when Wing does that thing where he splits the buster rifle into two and holds one in each hand with his arms stretched out and just friggin' spins around and everything goes boom?  Total credibility killer. =p

Assassins == stealth, right?  Heero was raised by an assassin, so I'm not sure why he doesn't get to be more stealthy!

When I read Hilde, I meant like, geez, ten years ago now? ^^' Back when yaoi fic wasn't really the norm, and it didn't matter anyway because I thought those yaoi fangirls were off their rockers and I was looking for het fic with strong Heero and Duo interaction (not an easy task), and Duo was paired with Hilde in quite a few of those cases.

Man, I love dating sims. ^_^ There was this great one for the Dreamcast called 'Typing of the Date'. =D Only I kept screwing myself because you have to choose the response you want and then start typing it.  But my Japanese reading skillz aren't so badass, so I'd skim real fast and then choose one... and then get burned by the fact that the Japanese put their negatives at the ends of their verbs!  I'd be like, ooh, that one says she's cute... *typetype* ...kawai... kunai??? Nooooo! ^^''

Well, one of the main problems I have with writing a dating sim, besides the fact that it means I'd totally not be writing fic, is that I'd want to make it web-based so others could enjoy themselves without having to download something.  Java's free, but oh-so-yesterday.  Flash seems to be where it's at these days, but you actually have to pay to get the tools to create flash apps.  (well, i suppose i could torrent it or something...)  Did you have something else in mind?  Functionality-wise, a dating sim is pretty much just a text tree with some images connected to it, so it'd be pretty simple, probably.  ... Yes, never fear, I too have spent far too much time contemplating this. >_>

But at least I know if I ever wanted to act on this crazy idea, it seems I know someone who might be interested in illustrating it... *meaningful look*
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 23rd, 2009 08:53 am (UTC) (Link)
It could be worse? At least he didn't pull any ballet moves while he was at it? XD; And if nothing else, it was efficient. (Though I seriously don't know how you fail to dodge something with THAT much of a predictable path. >_>; At least in space, anyway... I can see it being useful on land, especially against machines that aren't capable of flight or any sort of up/down movement.)

He gets a big laser-beam gun, stealth is for wusses (and Duo Maxwell). Heero does get to be stealthy when he's not in his Gundam. That decoy with the bok choi was pretty brilliant. XD;

You know, ten years ago I pretty much started out only reading yaoi. I blame yaoi-enthused friends for this, as the concept of fanfiction itself was alien to me then too.
Man, I'd imagine finding het with good Heero/Duo interaction would be hard even NOW. Though since the fandom's matured a lot, it's probably easier than it used to be. At least the Relena-hate's died down a lot too.

You got the surprise!negative at the end. haha I've only played a few dating sims in the past. (If Harvest Moon counts at all, I plaid that one avidly.) What gets me about them is that they're just so... cheesy yet stupidly addictive. (I'm the goal-oriented type, so once I have someone pegged, I can't stop playing until I've beaten the system.) >>;

I've heard great things about RenPy. It's free, it's web-based, and it's easy to use. A girl on deviantart poster her dating sim on there that she made with this program, and it played fine without me having to download anything. (Personally, I find Flash a pain in the ass to use. And their line tool sucks too. haha)

It's the text-tree aspect that always got me. I'm not much of a writer, and I can't string a plot together to save my life, let alone a *tree* worth of it. The art is easy enough to do, since once you have your character bases down, all you do is modify them to suit your needs.

*cough* I mean.... YOU KNOW NO SUCH PERSON.

But seriously, if you write it, I will totally draw for it. It's not as if I'm not drawing enough embarrassing romance already. >__>;
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 23rd, 2009 09:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
My excuse for Wing is that humans still conduct war on 2D planes because they haven't adapted their thinking yet.  Not versatile enough.  That's the only reason I can see for them all lining up to get shot like that. -_-

I love that Heero loves his veggies.  And fruits, too.  What was up with him playing fetch with those dogs on that beach... with a pineapple? O_o

Heh, finding het fic with strong Heero+Duo interaction was so difficult that I was forced to start reading yaoi!  But that's probably why I write a little differently than most people.  I came to the fandom sort of sideways. >_>

I was always more interested in the veggies in Harvest Moon than the dating. ^^ Beyond Typing of the Date, I watched some guys hilariously play through some random Japanese dating sim. (they accidentally directed the character to start hitting on his guy friend.) More recently, I've played JRPGs with dating sim elements, like Thousand Arms and Persona 3 & 4.  Princess Maker isn't quite a dating sim, but it's definitely got its addictive charms. ^_^

RenPy, hmm?  Python-based, eh?  Haven't touched Python for years, but it looks like the RenPy scripting language would drive me nuts. ^^ Not 'real' enough for me.  Though they say they can support a fairly complex Python back-end... But if I wanted to use Python, I could just write my own Python app.  It'd probably be more educational for me.  Though actually, I think I wanted to get away from simple 'dating sim/visual novel' and actually try to introduce some gameplay elements to it and make it more emergent.  Maybe something more like the Sims or something. ^o^ But without all that tedious 3D rendering. ^^''  When you played it, do you remember if it embedded in the browser/website, or did it open as a separate window?

Hmmmmmmmm.  You have given me much to ponder, grasshopper. *strokes chin*

Nothing wrong with a little fluffy romance once in a while. ^_^
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 24th, 2009 12:43 am (UTC) (Link)
Funnily enough, this 2D thinking extends to the mobile dolls as well, who have allegedly been programed in with different strategies to avoid being easy targets like that. But I guess if their engineer was an earthling too, they wouldn't be inclined to dodge more efficiently.
I wonder if this 2D thinking extends to colony-born children as well? Even though they'd spend most of their time on the colony, zero gravity would be a bigger part of their lives. Spacers may think of this sort of thing sooner than others. All this is sounding suspiciously like "Ender's Game" now. "The gate is down!"

Yeah... the pineapple... Heero's an improv kind of guy? And if there aren't any sticks around (hard to believe pineapples would be more abundant than sticks...) you make do with what's on hand? Some doujinshi anthologies joke that it was a bomb. >>;

Honestly, it's been so long I don't remember why I started reading the fiction that I do. I think I tried reading a few 1xR fics in my time, and was put off by the fairytale-perfection romance vibe of some. I'm a gunfight and explosions kind of girl, and pairing up two terrorists yields more gunfights and understated feelings than one on his own. haha Though I'll read any pairing that contains Duo, 1x2 was just the most abundant at the time.

I've never played the Persona games, but people have said that the dating sim component was awkward amongst all the serious issues you're dealing with. ^^; One of my classmates in the fine arts department made me play this dating sim caled "Yo-jin-bo", and I don't have the words to describe how awful and boring it was. So that active game component you're thinking of might be great for breaking up the monotony of the format.

If you want to introduce game elements, then flash is the way to go. RenPy is for those who can't/don't want to code (that'd be me), and by the sounds of things, you're definitely not one of them. I don't think I know anyone who has a legitimate copy of Flash or of most other Adobe products, so finding torrents wouldn't be hard.

It's been years since I saw the RenPy game on DA, so I don't remember how exactly it opened. I'm leaning towards it having opened in a separate window though.

Ponder away! Pondering is the spice of life.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 24th, 2009 05:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, Duo always told his students to think in 3D, but when the student asked if that was because he was a spacer, Duo claimed it was just common sense.  Common sense for a spacer, maybe. =)

While I wouldn't believe that of Heero, I could see why it could have been a bomb... I mean, he threw that thing straight into the ocean and those dumb dogs went straight in after it. O_o If I didn't know Heero better, I'd think he was just playing with their little canine brains.

I read a couple of 1xR fics, I think... except I ran into this one fic where Heero showed up on Relena's balcony one dark and stormy night, and then there was strip-because-of-hypothermia, and then there was a terrible lemon where Relena's eyes widened because Heero's dangly bits must have been something like seven? nine inches long (no joke, the author gave an actual measurement) and not only was I aghast (first lemon), but I couldn't stop thinking that Heero would pass out from blood loss every time he got hard if he had enough blood rushing south to fill that. x_x (i only remember these things because they were all so traumatizing.)

Dude, I loved Persona 3/4!  Nothing more cool than taking a break from the (boring) dungeon crawling to go hang out with my buddy and eat ramen! <3 Story-wise, though, I think I liked 3 better.  4 seemed almost frivolous in comparison, even if it was more 'realistic'.

Hmmmmmm.  So the trick would be to work the gameplay into the relationship building... like, Duo will love Heero more if Heero can shoot down twenty Aries in two minutes. ^o^
luel_exana From: luel_exana Date: June 25th, 2009 12:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Clever like a fox? No, no, clever like a spacer fox. haha I think that qualifies the Gundam pilots as perfect surviving role models in horror movies. They WOULD always check the ceiling.

What gets me is just that... contemplative look on his face when he's staring at the pineapple. You can almost see the gears turning. And then the jerk just lobs it into the ocean. I don't think Heero knows how to play with animals. ^^; (And he does say Quatre is better at dealing with them. haha)

My first lemon I couldn't get through without skipping most of the actual lemon parts. I had to man up and read the whole thing on the third try. Incidentally, that fic also involved Solo and Duo's backstory, so the mas-hallucination started early on. (How DID people find out about him anyway? Resources were so sparse back then.)

I heard a lot of people liking 4 better specifically FOR the "more realistic" issues. Either way, I should play them at some point. You know, after I finish all those other games I never got through. haha

And something like that. Since you're not going for a straight-out visual novel you'd have to structure the project differently than the "choose your own adventure" stories. If it's a game, you'll have to set specific goals for the players, and then present different tactics/variables a player can use to achieve those goals. (Keeping them varied and interesting for the players is the hard part.)

The minigames could be one of those tactics, but be careful about overwhelming the game with them. Some dating sims have so many minigames, they get obnoxious after a while. I'd be neat to weave the games into the story though, so if Heero ever does have to shoot down Aries, it could be for plot-related reasons. But the better he does, the more brownie points he'll get with Duo. (Besides the plot-mini games, there could be "for fun and brownie points" ones too, where you play Need for Speed or something like that against Duo. haha)

Some players don't like minigames because they're bad at them, and are playing the dating sim simply for the story/relationship component. I don't know how much you want to cater to those individuals, but making the games skipable or "easy to beat for minimum points" might be a good idea.

I have a book on game design that I should look through on some pointers for this. A good starting point would be to look at dating sim game systems that you felt worked really well, and lifting some of the gameplay strategies from them.

I'm thinking way too hard about this now, aren't I?
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: June 26th, 2009 06:38 am (UTC) (Link)
AND you can count on Gundam pilots not making stupid mistakes like fumbling their weapons and dropping them when they're attacked. =p If they weren't careful, though, they could accidentally wander off by themselves.  The pilots aren't exactly known for sticking together and using group tactics. -_-

In my personal fanon, when Heero has a dog, he has a corgi named Ein, named after Einstein, because when Ein was a puppy, Heero didn't buy him puppy toys.  Heero bought him Baby Einstein brand children toys, and Ein grew up to be the smartest damn dog you ever met. ^o^ (his friends all pretty much facepalm when they hear that story, though. =D)

Back in the day, I'm guessing the community was small enough that it would really only take one person writing Solo for him to get spread around like an L2 plague. =p

I guess the difference between P3 and P4 was that P3 had interpersonal drama, whereas P4 was all internal drama.  While I liked many of the P4 internal struggles, they were all variations on the main theme of accepting yourself for who you are, and it kind of got boring after a while.  I also thought the ultimate reason behind the entire story was pretty frail.

And P3 starred Midorikawa Hikaru as Akihiko-senpai!  Granted, it was localized and dubbed into English, so I didn't actually get to hear Heero's voice coming at me, but it's the thought that counts. ^^ I could totally imagine it!

After further consideration (far too much consideration)... I've decided it could be more like Persona than Princess Maker. (i could call it heero maker. ^o^) And it would be a total stats management game, because I love stats management.  And that's the gameplay, rather than thinking in terms of minigames or something.  If there were any minigames, I would have it more along the lines of Pachinko because the story changes depending on the outcome and I don't want people to always be shooting for the high score and then always getting a particular story progression.  And I don't want to impose any moral judgments on anyone about what the 'good' results are.  And speaking of story, it wouldn't be a narrative, per se.  No real 'plot'.  It would be more about the progression of the relationship.  Certain story events may happen in pursuit of that, but generally, the game is, you have stats, and you make decisions that affect your stats, and your goal is to get your stats to a place where you can bag the Duo before 'the end of the year' or whatever your self-appointed goal is.  And as you play along, you can do interactive conversations with Duo that alter your relationship stats or allow you to gauge your progress or whatever.  That's all.  It's simple enough, but there's plenty of room in there for enough random seeding of stats and events that it can be a different play experience many times over.

Hmmmmmmm.  I could just prototype it in C first with a simple text box....

The wings would be a killer on that guy, but I suppose it's still better than trying to build Wing Zero from EW.

Man, I would NOT want to be in the neighborhood if a Gundam started taking walks at 0300.  Those things shake the earth quite a bit!

Sparklies! SPARKLIES!!!!!
