not-fun-at-all fact!
I hate English sometimes.  Though I guess I can't really blame this one on the whimsies of the language.

A company e-mailed me to set up a phone interview for 'next Friday'.  Today is Thursday.  Just to be clear, I asked, by next Friday, are you referring to tomorrow, or next week Friday?  And he responded 'next Friday'. -_- Gee, thanks for being unhelpful.

In my book, 'next Friday' means next week Friday, but I'm under the impression that some people use 'next ___' to mean the upcoming one.  This is about as annoying as 'bi-monthly'.

So, what's a girl to do besides put the question to the internet?  Did he mean tomorrow, or next week?

Next week in my book. This Friday is this week, last Friday is last week, therefore next Friday is next week.

I believe 'next Friday' is 'next week Friday', but some people think 'next Friday' means the next Friday we're gonna hit on the calendar, which would mean 'this' Friday. -_- I think I'd have a bigger headache with it if it were Monday right now, because then there's a larger time interval to 'this' Friday, which might make it like 'next' Friday, but since Friday is tomorrow, I'm going to assume he would have said tomorrow if he meant tomorrow. (why yes, i totally overthink things, why do you ask? >_>)

In any case, it's nice to have confirmation that I'm not the only one who thinks the way I do!

It *probably* means Friday the 23rd, but play it safe and be ready for it to be tomorrow. Are they calling you, or are you supposed to call them?

Really. The professional thing to do would have been to put a DATE on the notice.

See, that's just FAR too sensible. It'll never catch on. ;)

When he first proposed 'next Friday', I specifically asked Friday the 16th or Friday the 23rd?  So it's completely headdesky that he just reiterated 'next Friday' like it was totally obvious.  If it was obvious, I wouldn't have asked!

Sigh.  Anyway, I'll be prepared tomorrow as well, just in case.  Luckily, they call me, and I just sit at home waiting.  But just to make things more annoying, he asked if I was available 'next Friday' preferrably in the afternoon between 2-5.  I said yes, I'm available any time during those hours, and he just said 'I'll set it up' and didn't actually give me a set time. x_x Phone interviews should not be like waiting for the cable guy!

Oh... sounds like mister HR guy is maybe playing filter games. Definitely be ready to deal with an interview tomorrow. If he does this and you assume next week (23rd) and he calls tomorrow and you're not available, he can play the 'you should have been aware' card to filter you from the resume stack. Mean, but not overly surprising.

and remember, the reason a manhole cover is round is so it cannot fall in. Apparently this has been a favorite in interviews as a problem solving indicator.

It's not a large operation, so it may not even be an HR guy at all.  I've gotten 'sorry we're going with someone else' letters signed by the front desk administrator before, and had my resume handled by the president of the company somewhere else.  Sometimes, it's all just about who's got the spare time. =)

Yeah, I gotta go with next week too, but Jeez... what a lovely guy. Least he could have done was give you a date to clarify! Though I'd still hang around tomorrow, just in case.
And good luck! *crosses fingers and rubs you all over with the lucky bunny*
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: April 16th, 2010 01:06 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, I would have went with next week, too... just the paranoia kicking in. ^^ That, and I've never had anyone schedule a phone interview more than a week in advance!  Usually, I only get a couple of days.

*ungirlygiggle* Lucky bunny tickles!

I will just add to the consensus that "next Friday" is next WEEK Friday and NOT tomorrow Friday, but then again... >_> This is an HR person and they are known to be... um... odd.

Either way, good luck! *sees the lucky bunny and raises the lucky wombat*

Great, now I'm going paranoid in the other direction!  There ARE really people who think 'next Friday' is 'this Friday', right?
lavendarlizard From: lavendarlizard Date: April 16th, 2010 02:29 am (UTC) (Link)
Unfortunately, yes. >.< But you will foil them by being ready tomorrow, just in case. ^___^

turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: April 16th, 2010 02:34 am (UTC) (Link)
Phew.  I mean, not that I didn't want everyone to agree with me, but I'd hate to have been an idiot in the other direction by thinking that tomorrow was even a possibility when no one in their right mind would think so. ^^

As long as they call at all... =p A company called me to set up my first phone interview of the season, e-mailed me confirmation, and then when the time came... nothing.  I e-mailed the HR lady who had contacted me, asking if something had come up, or if I had the time wrong... nothing.  But I was told by a bunch of people who also applied there, or knew people who had, that even if you had managed to get them to call you, they'd probably be jackasses anyway, so I'm not exactly torn up about it. -_-
lavendarlizard From: lavendarlizard Date: April 16th, 2010 02:44 am (UTC) (Link)
A new season for everyone to worry about! Jackass season... Bah!

I had a phone interview a month or so ago. They had it on speaker and everything echoed. >_> And somehow the "file clerk" job turned into "receptionist with a bit o' filing". *sigh*

merelymir From: merelymir Date: April 16th, 2010 04:19 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and say next week's Friday. I would have used this Friday to describe the 16th. And this would be exactly why I use full dates when writing up company emails. You really can't mistake Friday, April 16th for anything other than Friday, April 16th. I can't even use 4/16/10... I have UK counterparts to worry about. I say we switch to the stardate system already.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: April 16th, 2010 05:06 am (UTC) (Link)
I was almost sort of hoping someone would say 'tomorrow' just to justify me even asking the question! ^^' It just kills me that I specifically asked for clarification, and he just repeated what he said originally. *facepalm* If I do end up getting a job there, I'm hunting this guy down and giving him shit.

(note to self: only do that *after* they've signed a contract with me...)
merelymir From: merelymir Date: April 16th, 2010 06:37 am (UTC) (Link)
Sorry, no can do. I think I only say next Friday if it's still the weekend. Don't know why, just seems to be how my brain works. I guess Monday is effectively the beginning of the week for me and switches the clock over.

*rolls her eyes at the pseudo-maybe HR guy* I'd poke him again to see if he can confirm a date AND time. Ugh. People. Really need them to wear signs.
sablewick From: sablewick Date: April 16th, 2010 02:21 pm (UTC) (Link)
I always assumed it was the next Friday with no Fridays in between.
To clarify I tend to ask 'The coming Friday or Friday Week?'
English is apparently getting even less sensible.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: April 16th, 2010 07:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
Aha!  At least one vote for the other side, then.

The language gets less and less sensible, but any attempts to make people speak clearly and longly would inevitably result in people shortening those clear phrases in all sorts of new incomprehensible ways. -_-
miyun From: miyun Date: April 16th, 2010 06:24 pm (UTC) (Link)
Next week, because tomorrow would be 'this Friday'. Right? :o To prevent confusion...I attach numbers to it. XD Would be nice if they did that.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: April 16th, 2010 07:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, this morning I have to give the fellow a virtual apology.  He did send me a follow-up with actual numbers in it. -_-
