Two Doors Down : 3

Heero looked at the plate being set on his table with some confusion.

"Compliments of the gentleman over there," the barista said, tilting his head in that direction.  He slipped away while Heero looked as indicated.

The man two tables over took Heero's raised eyebrow as an invitation to move to the table next to him.  "Hi."

"What's this for?"  Free promotion was his guess.  But he was pretty sure the guy didn't work for the establishment.

The guy shrugged with a smile.  "Celebrating the end of the semester, if you like.  I'm Duo."

There were a few seconds of silence before the answer.  "Heero.  Do you greet everyone with pumpkin pie?"

"When it's available.  It's a good pie.  Gotta use every excuse you can to load up on it while 'tis the season."

He studied the man for longer than might be considered polite before leaning back in his chair and setting his tablet down.  "What do you study?"

"Chemistry."  Duo took this as a sign that he'd been cleared for approach and he scooted his chair over to transfer tables once more, though somewhat less officially this second time.  "You?"

"Robotics."

"Cool.  Grad, right?"

He nodded.

"Yeah, me, too."  Duo had been pretty sure based on the evidence.  In fact, he'd waited until he had that evidence.  He had nothing against younger guys, but he TA'd undergrads and sure as heck didn't need to be creating potential drama.  "I've seen you around, but never outside this place.  Different departments and all, I guess."

"Have you been looking for me?"

"I would have noticed you."

"I don't have the same kind of... distinguishing characteristics that you do."  He nudged his chin in the direction of Duo's shoulder, over which a long braid rested.

Duo smiled.  "You're not without... distinguishing characteristics yourself.  I'd have noticed."

"What's your area of research?"

"Thermodynamics.  My thesis is on, well, to sum it up all nice and quick, big booms."

"Interesting.  Do you do that work on campus?"

"Nah, the school's got a couple of off-sites.  Well, sure, you can work with, say, thermite on campus.  That stuff's not usually explosive.  But not the big boom stuff."

"My work's not half so interesting."

"It's all in the application.  Robots are being used more and more with disarming bombs and stuff.  Plenty of potential for boom there."

"Would you be the kind of person arming the bombs or disarming them?"

"Ooh, good question!  I mean, obviously I wouldn't arm them in, like, a terrorist kind of way.  But there's plenty of legit reasons to blow stuff up.  How about you?  Are your robots going to destroy the world or save it?"

"Hm.  I've never thought about that before.  I won't be providing them with adaptive AI, access to heavy weaponry, and a directive to protect humanity, that's for sure."

"Ah, if I were secretly here from the future, I'd be very happy to hear that!"

"If you were secretly here from the future, would you just take my word for that?"

"You know, if I were secretly here from the future, I'd probably study film, or maybe writing, and then make some blockbuster movies teaching everyone the dangers of superintelligent computers.  Then everybody would know better, not just the one or two guys I tell."

They spent a few seconds sizing each other up, weighing the exchange in their minds.

Heero smiled slightly.  "Can I buy you another drink?"

Duo looked delighted by the offer, but had to shake his head apologetically.  "With the week I've just had, I think I've probably hit my caffeine limit."

Heero pursed his lips thoughtfully.  "Virgin mocha?"

Duo considered the meaning of that for a little while before smirking.  "Sure.  Ever done one with mint?"

He shook his head and signaled the barista.  "Two mint hot chocolates, please.  And an extra fork."

Bonding over mutual geekiness and pumpkin pie. I like that. Maybe they can find an interesting way to combine their two fields. Then they'd have even more reasons to spend time together.

I tried to cook up a fic where they met on the job, with Heero a Preventer and Duo on the Bomb Squad, but it wasn't happening.  Ended up rolling it into this one. =)

I'm so far behind! I feel like I blew the hand off! :D You're doing so much better than I did. Content and EVERYthing. And adorable, geeky, flirty content no less....

Unfortunately, writing geekiness comes easily to me. -_- They were being all slick and smooth with each other at first... and then the geekiness hit.

Geekiness rules! Especially with big booms and robots. ^___^

These are the things you really need to learn about each other to determine if you're compatible. ^^''

And whether collaboration to build a giant robot with really cool weaponry is possible. ^___^

Hm, well I suppose thermodynamics could be applied to beam sabers... Though as I recall, they're actually formed of some kind of particle entrapped in some sort of energy field.  According to UC lore, anyway.

This was a great meeting between the two of them. I liked the mix in the meeting of minds and dessert. :)

I've found a number of these neighbor scenarios seem to involve food. Guess it's a good way of meeting new people. =)
