Two Doors Down : 4

"ETA: Three minutes."

"Roger that."  Duo looked over to Heero, hunkered down behind a wooden crate that was quite fortunately filled with mobile suit parts, so it blocked bullets more effectively than one might have thought at first glance.

Heero looked back and nodded to indicate that he'd heard the same message over his comm.  He toggled his throat mike.  "Be advised: there's a stack of hydrazine in the northwest corner of the warehouse.  About a dozen barrels."

"Copy that.  Bravo out."

Duo chanced a quick peek around the corner of his own cover -- a whole two crates -- to assess the situation, but saw nothing worth shooting and ducked back.  A burst of gunfire chased him, a second too late, abruptly cut off as Heero took the opportunity to fire off a couple of shots at the intrepid gunman.

Heero flipped his mike back to their private transmission mode.  "So.  Since I have you here.  I wanted to ask you."

Duo threw him a somewhat incredulous look across the distance separating them, but then shrugged.  Not like they were going anywhere for at least three minutes.  "Heh.  Shoot."

"Have you been avoiding me?"

"What?"

"I think you've been avoiding me.  For the last week or so."

Duo moved to a slightly different spot along his two-crate cover and fired a couple of shots at where he'd last seen a guy, just to remind him to stay down.  "Well, I'd run over and join you right now if that forklift were in a slightly better position."  The forklift between their two hiding spots was angled to be shoddy cover at best, and an impediment to a short, straight path at worst.

"Don't be absurd.  There's not enough room over here for two."

"So I'm not exactly avoiding you by choice, am I?"

"For the last week or so, Duo."  Someone else let loose some bullets in their direction, followed by a click.  Someone cursed, and then there was another burst of fire from another direction to cover the man.  "Since Quatre's party, I think.  I'm wondering if you overheard me talking to Relena."

"I don't eavesdrop on other people's private conversations, man."

"No, but you can accidentally overhear things."

Duo responded by prying at a loose panel in one of his crates.

Heero peeked out, was fortunate enough to find a target, and got off a few shots before detecting movement out of the corner of his eye.  He sat back swiftly, removing himself from harm's way.  "If you didn't like what you heard, just say the word."

"And what the hell word is that?" Duo asked, sorting through some of the pieces he had extracted from the crate.  Never mind, he could guess what the hell word.  "Fuck, Yuy, and then what?"

"And then you never hear me speak of it again."

"Well, that wouldn't exactly change the situation, now would it?"

"I can't change what I feel, Duo.  All I can control are my actions.  So if you want me to act as if I --"

Duo glared a message at him, holding a roundish metal piece of some sort, about the size of his fist.  "Frag out!" he shouted, lobbing it toward the bad guys.  Three bad guys fled from what they assumed would be a blast radius.  Two of them were shot down in the process.  After about five seconds without an explosion, loud curses came at them, followed by angry, frustrated gunfire.

"I'm not saying the fucking word, Yuy," Duo growled.  "And I'm not avoiding you.  I just... I just needed some space to think, okay?"

"Needed.  Past tense?"

Duo was silent as he checked his timepiece.  Then silent some more.

Heero heard the crunch of a footstep on some debris and leaned out for a few quick shots.  When he settled back into his hiding position, he reloaded his weapon, muttering 'last one' over the comm.

Duo made a sound to indicate he'd heard.  "I think I'm done with space.  Might need some more time, though."

"What's the holdup?"

"I don't... I dunno, maybe?  I didn't immediately think, 'fuck, I'm gonna have to turn him down,' so... you know.  Maybe."

Their comms crackled.  "In position!"

Duo switched channels.  "Ready!"

"Go!  Go!  Go!"  The doors in the back burst open and their allies streamed in to take the enemies from behind.

Romance, Heero and Duo style. I love how they can talk about something like this in the middle of a gunfight. No wonder I love these guys (and they love each other, even if they aren't quite at that stage just yet).

Just another day on the job for the boys...

Timing is everything! LOL This was great. A completely different twist. I love the action juxtapositioned with the conversation and how they never really missed a beat in either one.
Duo will come around.... :D

It's one of my (many) pet peeves when the boys are on a mission and they engage in some stupid relationship thing and the distraction gets them captured or shot.  So I have a personal guideline that they don't do/talk relationship while on the job.  Unless they can do it without it being a distraction at all.  Or not doing something about it is a distraction by itself.  This... was sort of skirting the edge of my guideline. ^^

Damn, they are so good. ^__^ Wonder if the bad guys felt pissed at being nearly ignored.

A frag fake... so obvious and yet... they bit.

*snicker*

They weren't talking loudly enough for the other guys to hear they were being ignored. (yay throat mikes.) The boys like to keep their personal business to themselves.

I think there's a certain automatic reaction that always come with 'frag out!' (sort of like 'it's a gundam!' ^o^) Though of course, if it'd been a real grenade, there would have been no particular reason for Duo to shout the warning since all his allies were pinned down with him...

I imagine Duo doesn't really have anything more to think about... He just needs more time to reconcile himself to the answer. =D
