fic - two doors down : 12
Thus concludes the Two Doors Down collection.  I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. =(

Two Doors Down : 12

Duo emptied his clip into the paper target with a stormy frown.  Weapons were not toys.  He gave them the respect they deserved, the focus they deserved, and in return, they helped him shut out the unruly mutterings inside his head.

He slapped the button to bring the target to him as he reloaded his weapon with automatic motions.  A satisfying cluster, he saw as the paper man got closer.  A neat grouping of holes right through the heart.

Shot through the fucking heart is right, he thought sourly.  His next two clips demolished the head of the next paper target.

He was finished here.  He punched the button again, pulled off his earmuffs, stretched a little to loosen up his muscles, and in the process, he caught someone standing two lanes down in the otherwise empty range, watching him.  No weapons, no targets.  Just watching.  Good.  Duo was reassured that he hadn't missed someone shooting so close to him, earmuffs or not.

Heero pulled off his own set of earmuffs.  "Duo.  Can we... start over?"

Duo pursed his lips as he went about his business of tidying up.  "Can you... be more specific?"

Heero's lips twisted.  In annoyance, in amusement, it was difficult to tell with him.  "Our conversation from earlier.  We were interrupted before I could finish my thought."

"That's okay, I got the gist of it."

"No, I think perhaps... There was plenty of room there for misinterpretation.  I would like to make myself clear."

Duo took a breath, held it, released it perhaps more loudly than was necessary, then turned to him, arms crossed.

"I was referring to myself, to my own shortcomings, when I spoke of the absurdity of what you said.  I did not mean to imply that... you were somehow unworthy of love."

A raised eyebrow prompted him to continue.

Heero took a moment to gather his thoughts, now that he was reassured of his opportunity to speak his piece.  "Love.... This is an emotion.  It is well within my emotional range.  Romance.  Passion.  Relationship things.  These things are... actions.  Expressions of that emotion, love.  My actions are... usually perceived as quite far from conventional.  I see no reason why the expression of this emotion would be any different for me."

Duo's expression loosened up enough for a wry tilt of his mouth.  "Are you talking about a hypothetical emotion or...?"

Heero shifted uncomfortably.  "I feel... a complicated mix of things for you, Duo.  Most people would probably call it love and be done with it.  I... prefer not to be so lazy.  I can call out certain things, but... as I understand it, love comes in many different forms.  It's a bit too generic a term for my liking."

Hmm.  He considered that from a few different angles and decided this attention to detail was an expression of a certain emotion or two or three, and that it was indeed not quite conventional.  But in a very good way, as far as he was concerned.  Time to chip away at this complicated mix of things, then.  "Well.  Do you at least like me?"

"Yes."  The answer was firm and calm, and still managed to have a bit of a 'duh' hanging off the end of it.

One down, though he'd had no doubts about that one.  "And have you ever... had thoughts of a physical nature about me?"

Heero had the adorableness to look thoughtful for a few seconds.  "I believe such thoughts have crossed my mind a few times.  Which is more than anyone else can boast of."

He liked where this could go.  He closed the distance between the two of them, sidled up nice and good into Yuy's personal space without getting too aggressive.  "And are you having any such thoughts now?"  He looked into Heero's eyes and saw the answer sneak out shyly.  He smiled.  "Good.  I'd hate to think I totally misread the signs.  Which, you know, implies that I was able to read those signs, which implies that you aren't entirely 'far from conventional' in all ways."

"Maybe you're just good at reading me."

"If that's 'all' that means, I'll take it.  More than happily."  He touched his hand to Heero's hip.  Watched Heero's eyes drop for a moment in that direction before resolutely resuming visual contact.  "Look, a guy like you and a guy like me... I've never thought for a second that we'd have anything remotely resembling a conventional relationship.  Well, okay, maybe here and there, when I was drunk or high on meds or something, but that doesn't count."

"You haven't been high on meds for... about fourteen months."

Duo reflexively did the math and shrugged unapologetically.  "Yeah.  And you took good care of me while I was.  You even scowled at the nurse for dosing me up that high and everything.  I appreciated that."

"You... would have stood watch for me, too."

"Yeah, I would have."  He touched his other hand to Heero's hip as well.  Watched Heero's eyes drop again, as far down as Duo's lips, though maybe it was just coincidence.  No matter.  Duo leaned forward, leading with those lips.

A moment before contact, Heero pulled back.  "Can we... not do this here?"

Duo glanced around the empty range.  He wasn't sure if it was because they were sort of in public, or because they were at work, or because it was the shooting range.  Either way, there were much better places for kisses.  "Let's grab some dinner?"  At Heero's nod, he snuck a quick brush of his lips against Heero's cheek before returning to the disposal of his gear.

That was a great way to end this series. It lets us imagine what's going to happen next, and I'm sure we can all imagine a lot of nice, unconventional things. :-)

This has been a great pleasure to read. Thank you for writing and sharing it. No matter what fandoms I'm in now and in the future, Heero and Duo will always own my heart.

I sort of imagine Duo eventually thinking about it and saying, wait, how unconventional are you in the sex department?  Because I'm fine with unconventional, but I have my limits.  Heero: ...I don't even know what that means.  Duo: *phew* ^o^

Thank you for faithfully commenting!

They are adorable no matter how they get together. Thank you for so many lovely fics over the past week and a half. Best wishes for 2016.

Interesting how while Hero is trying to verbally analyze his feelings, Duo is picking up and analyzing the subtle physical messages… it may not be conventional, but it is already a complimentary relationship.
Thanks for these 12 days!

x + y = z

Duo is satisfied knowing that z is the answer.  Heero is mostly satisfied knowing z is the answer, but he would be even more satisfied if he could solve for x and y. ^o^ To him, you can only take z on faith if you don't know x and y, and he doesn't like just taking it on faith if he doesn't have to.

Re: Gosh,

Yeah, those two things are totally not mutually exclusive!

Such a bitter-sweet number '12'. *sigh* So sorry to see this come to an end, but I'm sure you're relieved to get to the end. :D
Never ceases to amaze me the depths you give them, and the completely different mind-sets and the processing of information and just... the whole package.
Just beautiful work, as always. I hope this is a looooooong standing tradition. ^______^
Happy New Year!

Well, it's not like I reinvent the wheel with every story.  These guys have been accumulating crud and cruft in my head for the last fifteen years or so. -_- More than enough to go plumbing through.

How come no one ever takes the hint and volunteers for the next twelve days? =p (i prefer the term 'bad habit', remember?)

Getting to the end of this means getting back on the wagon about my other fics. *sigh*
