fic - i backward cast my e'e part 31 [novella]
Title:  I Backward Cast My E'e
Part:  31
Notes:  That's it, folks.  That's the end of this one.  The next novella is taking its place in the queue, but I won't be posting it until I've gotten quite a bit of it done.  Hopefully, that'll make the thing tie together more nicely than this thing did.
Additional note:  Happy graduation season!

I Backward Cast My E'e
sequel-lite to for promis'd joy
Part 31

He concentrated on the sound of Heero's soft breathing beside him, gauging its weight and evenness before deciding he might venture a quiet word.  "Hey..."

"Still can't sleep."

There was silence for a moment from Heero before he sighed quite audibly into the night.  "I already did my best to wear you out.  Sorry if that's not--"

"Oh, hush," Duo interrupted quickly.  "Not your fault I've got too much energy tonight."

Heero stifled a yawn.  "Then sorry, you're on your own this time."

Yes, having another go at it would probably just short them on enough sleep to make tripping on the way up to the platform during the graduation ceremony a distinct possibility.  But now that he knew he wouldn't wake Heero, he felt at liberty to shift a few times until he got himself into a possibly more sleep-conducive position, ending up on his side facing Heero, comfortably and reassuringly close without crowding.  He settled in contentedly, but his mind didn't follow suit.

There was stuff buzzing around in there, and Duo did his best to will it to rest.  Tomorrow was just a formality, a pretty little ceremony whose main purpose was surely just to provide pretty little photo ops.  Their diplomas had already been earned, regardless of whether or not they attended.  The ubiquity of social media didn't make it difficult to say goodbye to old friends.  They had already started their transition into their brave, new futures, taking advantage of the classless days leading up to their graduation to start cleaning up some of Heero's stuff.  Hell, they'd even already started investigating what neighborhoods they would like to get an apartment in.  And hell, Duo already lived with Heero half the time as it was.  Getting an apartment together should have been nothing special.

But something was.  This was it.  This was official.  Formality or not, there was no going back now, no more last minute final nitpicky details that could take this away from them.  No more safety net, nothing holding them back from becoming productive citizens making active contributions to society.  Very soon, no one would be able to claim them as dependents on their tax returns, for their medical insurance.  Very soon, they wouldn't be able to claim the defense of being stupid college students, and very soon, they would have to live up to the responsibilities of being well-educated college grads.

Given all that, maybe he didn't feel too bad about pausing for an excited, sleepless night, to take a deep breath and look back over the years before stepping across that invisible threshold between the present and the future.

He shifted slightly, and his hand brushed up against Heero's.  He was about to withdraw it when he felt Heero's fingers move and curl around his.  That warm security deserved some contemplation.  He gave it its due with a smile he'd probably be embarrassed about, had anyone been able to see it.  "I think," he started deliberately, "you're the best thing I'll be taking away from my college experience."

The fingers tightened around his before Heero shifted onto his side to face him.  "I think... you're the last thing I ever expected to be taking away from my college experience."

Duo laughed softly, barely more than a snort and a twitch of his shoulders.  "Yeah, well, the best laid plans..."

"...Sometimes become even better plans."

"...Amen to that."

I'm just impressed that I found something ending-like for it.  Circular and everything!

Ugh, I can't believe it took me nearly four years to get this finished. x_x

But you did find an ending! I am so impressed! ^___^

And... well... sorry to see them go...? O.O Such fine industrious lads... ^___^

Don't worry, all my lads seem to be fine and industrious.  I don't think you'll be missing them for long. ^^

Wow, I'm somewhat overwhelmed (<-understatement)

This is lovely, and also gives me the urge to run right back to the beginning and start all over again.

I adore your characterisation of the Gundam characters and love the path you took them on in this particular story.

Glad to hear it. ^_^ My best laid plans for them didn't really expect them to go this way, either... but I can't say it wasn't better this way. =)

holy smokes! another weekend (plus) dedicated to reading your awesomeness!

I concur that you have both strong and unique characterization. it still rings true to my (watery, vague) canon images of Heero and Duo (that and four bucks will get me a coffee!)

I applaud your wherewithall to keep up a project of this size over *four* years! I have no idea what your process is, but I think it's incredible to be able to maintain the feeling of a story, the characterizations (hell, even the plot itself) coherent as it gets put together. I'm also chuffed to know that you're still writing (dude, I was surprised to see this stamped May, 2011). Seems like the writing populace is growing smaller and smaller, so... always encouraging to see others putting out well-planned (or at least well executed) work. *dies of happy fangirliness*

The ending for this was also beautiful! It really did come full circle :DDD Can't wait to read whatever's next!! (and probably rediscover other things I've read too long ago)

Glad you enjoyed this! Gladder still that you stuck around for the four years it took to finish it. -_-' Plans1 took one week to write. Plans2 and 3 took maybe a month? This should not have taken this long at all! But hopefully that just means I managed to entice a small portion of the reading populace to stick around for that long, too. ^^

I do it by... essentially never changing my base characterization of the boys. I usually write them the same every time. Different things happen to them all the time that may change the expression of who they are, but they're still the same people inside. That's how I see things, which to me, simplifies things an awful lot. =)

May I continue to please you with my work! And here's to another four years!

Wow! I just spent from May until now moving across country and being generally busy. I finally get a moment to read one of my favourite authors... and find that you finished the story. Yay! So nicely done! I loved Duo and Heero in this, and how they dealt with unexpected things that kept occurring in their lives (which is what life is about, after all). I love the interactions of Heero with Howie, whom I'm always kind of so-so about, but whom I liked in this story. Actually, I love how you write all of the characters in your story. But mostly, I liked how you wrapped things up with the title from the first part of the series - nice way to tie it all together. Nothing I say is adequate praise, so I'll just say that I hope to see your next novella soon!

Welcome back. ^_^ Glad to hear you liked it.  If I were the commissioning type, I'd consider commissioning a pic of the final scene to act as a companion piece to my pic of the ending of the first part, but maybe that'd be beating the circularity over the head a bit. ^^

I hope I'LL see my next novella soon. -_-

It's over!! Nooo!!!

Re: *Sniffle*

I'm not actually between fics.  I just have about a month between posts. ^_^ 'Between fics' doesn't really mean anything with Haven anyway, since it's a not really a continuous plot sort of thing.

Re: *Sniffle*

Guh, writing from the long lost past...

That entire series is available here on LJ as well.  Everything was transferred over from there to here.  I really wish all my links were working properly.  You can find this series under this tag: http://turnippatch.livejournal.com/tag/fic_kd

Or you can hit up the main index of my 'site' if you want a more holistic view of things: http://turnippatch.livejournal.com/563.html

Blarghfargle! Stupid LJ messed with ALL the links on the index, none work. 😡

Re: *Sniffle*

Yeah, I realized that a little later on. =p I may have to think about actually reporting a bug, except I don't think it'll get it fixed any faster.

The other best way to navigate the site is to click on the tags to the right of the screen.  All fics are categorized under the appropriate tag.  You just may have to hit 'next page' a lot of times to get to the beginning.

This whole AU was amazing! I enjoyed the whole ride. I enjoyed your dialogues, your Heero and Duo, I enjoyed that they are working out their differences and opinions to make their relationship work. ;A; So so beautiful. <3333

Thank you for writing this amazing novella-length series that started with Best Laid Plans.

I think in my head, Heero actually ends up quitting the aerospace thing after a few years to go do something else.  There was a smidge of angst involved in that.  Duo sticks with it, though, and naturally they stay together anyway.
