Inspired by all this talk of blink-and-you'll-miss-it...

Two Flirting Doves : 6

"...And now to our final contestant, Duo Maxwell.  He was in first place coming in to Final Jeopardy, and he is still in first place after two correct answers from his opponents.  He didn't have to bet anything to keep his lead and take home fifty thousand dollars, plus his total here after this round, for the charity of his choice."

"I expected him to do well," Wufei murmured to Heero beside him.  They were sitting in the studio audience of tonight's charity game of Jeopardy: Peacekeepers edition.  "But not this well."

Heero leaned in to whisper back.  "After you add his competitive nature to free money for a good cause, this really shouldn't have been a surprise."

"Hm.  Perhaps."

"...So let's see if our Preventers representative came up with the correct question to tonight's answer!"

The question appeared on the big screen for the audience to read.

The host stared.

Heero glanced over to Duo, who stood there with a bland expression on his face.

On Heero's other side, Trowa snickered.

Wufei brought fingers up to his forehead.

The host recovered.  "Ah.  No, I'm afraid 'Will you go out with me?' was not the question we were looking for.  Uh, let's see how much Duo bet."

The bottom half of the screen was revealed.  It said zero dollars, with an asterisk referring to a footnote scribbled further down.  It was crammed in there and the screen barely had the resolution to show it legibly, but it read: 'I'd have been willing to bet like $11111 on this, except, well, you know :)'

The host managed to carry on with announcing Duo as the official winner of tonight's game.

Trowa had trouble suppressing his chuckle.

Heero elbowed him.  "This is your fault.  You told him to be creative and spontaneous about asking me out."

"Good advice, wasn't it?"

"I'd have preferred something without an audience."

"At least he didn't write your name up there," Wufei pointed out.

"That question is directed at me, right?"

Wufei snorted.  "I don't think all those ones were an accident, Yuy."

"Just checking," he muttered defensively.

While making obligatory small talk up on stage to make useful footage for the credits reel, Duo pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the incoming message.  "Yes.  Idiot." it read.  He put it back in his pocket with a smug smile and kept up the banal chatter.

* for the record, going in to final jeopardy, 2nd place had $x and duo had $2x + 200 or something, because there's no way he'd have sacrificed extra money for his charity just so he could ask heero out like this.  he'll probably donate the extra $199 to the charity out of pocket to make up for it.

I loved this. :-) I especially love that Trowa is to blame. I can see him telling that to Duo. I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually Quatre's idea, delivered by Trowa.

I see it more as Trowa telling Duo to just stop overthinking it already, stop trying to plan it, and most of all, just stop annoying me already and just ask him out the next opportunity you get!  Sheesh!

I really, really like it when Duo is portrayed as being brainy. He would have to be in order to handle a Gundam. Sorry, once I get started on that topic I have to rein myself in.

Love Heero's reaction to Duo's question.

"That question is directed at me, right?
Silly boy.

I think Duo (and Heero) have a great curiosity about the world, and ergo a thirst for learning.  And the intellectual capacity to learn and absorb and understand anything that captures their attention.  That said, I think Duo would be better at Jeopardy because it involves more trivia, and I think Duo would be more fascinated by the trivial pursuits than Heero would be. =)

Heero has just recently started exercising his curiosity about a relationship with Duo, so he wants to be sure he's understanding things correctly. ^o^

Duo just barely refrained from drawing little hearts and stuff around his question.  Thought it'd be better to play it cool. =)

Duo, winner in more than one way!

Heero's going to have to give him a hard time about it, though.  On principle, yanno?

Damn, what a clever boy! ^___^

It would have been a lot more subtle coming from Quatre...

Oh, and thank you to the LJ gods for allowing me back in. O.o

Duo's a bit hit or miss in the subtlety department. ^^

Well, the holidays are officially over and keeping up with LJ in a timely manner is a thing of the past. *sigh* I shall now spam thee.
I was caught as flat as Heero with the question... did not see THAT coming! ^o^ And oddly, I adore Wufei in this one. Poor guy... :D

Can't you just see Wufei facepalming? ^o^

Poor Wufei... Probably thinks he's the only sane one left in the lot. ^o^
