Two Peas in a Pod : 4

"Man, building a snowman is a lot harder than it seems."

Heero watched him scrape at the snow with his gloved hands.  They had worked together at first, gathering enough snow for a small, rough sphere.  After that, Duo had attempted to roll it larger, which had prompted a lament on the utter impracticality of anything ever 'snowballing' into something huge and out of control, as well as a resolution to never use that phrase again.  Ever.  "Maybe we just don't have the right kind of snow."

"Maybe this is why people just stop and have snowball fights."

"We promised Quatre we wouldn't."

"I know.  And I agreed because I thought we could have fun building a snowman instead."  He stood up with a disgusted sigh and pushed at the snow with his boot.  "Well, it's not like we have a spare scarf and a carrot or anything."

"For the nose."

"Does it have to be a carrot?"

Duo rubbed his own nose, seeking out a reasonably warm spot of skin on his wrist between his damp gloves and his cold sleeve.  "Well, I was going for a totally traditional scene, but now that you mention it, what a waste of perfectly good food."

"A rock would probably do just as well.  Or a stick, if you wanted the same profile."

"Sticks are for his arms."

"No one said he can't use sticks for more than one thing."

"He would have an arm sticking out of his nose."

Heero sniffled tolerantly.  "It could be a short stick."

"It would be a short arm sticking out of his nose!"

"He wouldn't even have a nose in that case."

Duo sighed.  "Maybe I'm just not cut out for the whole snowman thing."

Heero thought for a moment before coming up with an alternative.  "Snow angels?"

"Who in their right mind wants to lie down in the snow and roll around in it?  Even I'm not feeling that bonkers today."  He sighed again, a bit more disconsolately this time.  "Maybe I'm just not cut out for any of this snow stuff."

Heero put an arm around him and pulled him close.  "People cuddle up in front of a fire indoors and watch the snow.  We could do that."

Duo put his head on his shoulder.  "Nothing to even watch.  Stupid snow's not even falling right now.  We can't even do that properly."

"We... could go ahead and do a snowball fight."  Surely they would be good at that.

"Quatre said he'd do something mean if we did.  And I believe him."

Heero studied the mound of snow Duo had managed to shape.  "How about a snow corgi?"

There were a few seconds of silence before Duo lifted his head to look at him.  "Snow corgi?  Like a Miles corgi?"

"How many other words sound like 'corgi'?  Look, you've already more or less got a body.  It was kind of oblong anyway.  Add four small snowballs for the legs, a medium sized one for the head.  Make it misshapen enough to mistake the thing for ears and a snout."

"Rock for a nose," Duo mused, getting into the spirit of things.  "And eyes.  And I'm pretty sure we can do misshapen.  The sphere thing was a total no-go.  And Relena's dropping by later, isn't she?  Too bad she's probably leaving the dog at home.  We can totally pretend we did this on purpose, anyway."

"Sounds like a plan to me."

Duo gave Heero a thorough smooch before setting to work.

"It would be a short arm sticking out of his nose!"

I almost snorted my soda when I read that line. I'm siding with Duo on that one. :-)

Well, it could be a carrot-shaped stick or something... =)

Clever Heero. And strict Quatre with the vague intimidation :)

Clever corgi, working his way back into the story. ^o^

Quatre only needs a certain gleam in his eye to get the job done...

Three cheers for the adorable corgi!

What's with Quatre making the rules?? No snowball fights? What's up with that?
And really... snowmen are not all that easy. Especially when you're a little kid trying to get that second ball on top of the first one... >_>
Snow corgi; Heero is very inventive. :D

I assumed they were in Quatre's backyard and he didn't want them breaking all the windows by accident, or something like that. ^^'

I quite happily live in a snow-free clime, so I've never tried the snowman thing, but thinking about it objectively... it seems like you'd need some cooperative snow.  And rather a lot of it, too.

Oh yeah... it has to be a wet snow or it won't pack. And if it's not deep enough, when you roll the stupid thing around, you just pick up grass and leaves and your snowman looks like the Swamp Thing. And if it's wet enough to pack... it's heavy as lead. And Heero's right about the carrot thing... Mom would never give us one.

Good to know I wasn't getting it completely wrong, then. ^^ I'm never saying something 'snowballs' again.  Ever.

Heh. Better than a snow chihuahua. That would probably bite someone. ^___^

You came close to my original idea for this story... The short stick arms had Duo's brain wander in the direction of a Tyrannosaurus snow rex.  The short arms made him think of short legs, which made him think of snow corgi.  Which then made him think of epic t-rex vs corgi battle.  Guess who would have won? ^o^
