fic - two peas in a pod : 12
Thus concludes the Two Peas in a Pod collection.

Two Peas in a Pod : 12

Duo came out of the bathroom re-doing his braid absently, but the moment the hallway ended and the living room began, his fingers faltered.  He tied off the tail self-consciously, a few plaits short of its usual length, and turned his attention to tidying up his bed for the night.  The pillows were re-distributed across the sofa, the blanket neatly folded up and returned to the linen closet, and the best part of the process was that he could avoid looking over to the kitchen for a little while longer.  But then it was done and he took a deep breath and went on over to the island that was workspace on one side and breakfast counter on the other.

Heero's back was to him, keeping an eye on a skillet on the stove top while beating some eggs in a bowl.  Duo was satisfied with the view until the toaster popped, drawing his attention to the side.  The eggs landed in the skillet with an appropriately gratifying sizzle and he decided he should be useful, walking around to the other side of the island to get some plates and only belatedly realizing he rather liked having that cover between them when Heero glanced his way and their eyes met.

"Hey," he said reflexively.

Heero nodded his good morning before returning to his task.

Duo put the plates out next to the cooktop, got some flatware to fiddle with before speaking.  "About last night..."

"I apologize."  He turned off the flame, hefted the skillet, and loaded the plates with the eggs, scrambled with sausage, bell peppers, and onion.  "I misinterpreted the signs.  If there were, in fact, any signs at all.  I hope you can overlook my fumble as a mere learning experience."

Duo took two cups over to the coffee maker.  French press, really, because it was simple and didn't take up much space and that was relevant because Heero only took it out when Duo was over.  Heero didn't really drink coffee himself, but Duo did, and that was the whole reason he even had any coffee in the apartment at all.  But Duo felt bad drinking it alone, so Heero would take a bit of coffee in his milk, just as Duo would take a bit of milk in his coffee, and "No, you were right," he blurted.

He hadn't quite worked out how he felt, even though he'd spent some time last night thinking about it, and he hadn't even been quite sure what he was going to say when he broached the topic this morning, but it all started coming together in his head.  "You were right.  There have been signs.  I think.  I didn't realize... I should be the one apologizing.  For the mixed signals.  I mean, I thought I was... I didn't think you... so I stopped, you see?  I didn't realize I... hadn't.  So then you... and I didn't know..."  He risked a glance over to Heero.

Heero blinked at him, a perplexed expression on his face.  "I... can't even begin to interpret that.  Do you need your coffee first?"

Duo blinked back at him, then laughed and scrubbed at his face with his hand.  "God, yes, I need my coffee.  I need my coffee like I need you."  He paused, peeked out between his fingers, and laughed again.  "You're right.  I'm not even sure how to interpret that.  But..."  He smiled and sidled up into Heero's personal space.  "Interpret this, Yuy," he said, planting a soft kiss on Heero's lips.  "You didn't misread the signs.  You just read a heckuva lot faster than I did."

a special shout-out to all of the kind veggies that helped me get this collection done. ^_^

I have really enjoyed these ficlets! Thanks so much for writing these- they have really cheered me up during the after-holiday blahs! (even though technically, the holiday doesn't end until Epiphany. But I had to go back to work, boo.)

Happy Epiphany! ^_^ Sometimes I feel like there's just so much going on during the holidays that there's no time to enjoy the holiday fics that come out (what little there is of it these days =/).

I'm also one of those kids that would hoard all my Halloween candy and eat just one piece a day for weeks rather than gorging on it all at once. ^^'

Most excellent series, M'dear Turnip! :) This has been a fun series and a wonderful way to wind slowly out of the holidays. And you saved the best for last... this was adorable! I hope it's a tradition now? :D

Bah.  I was behind enough and/or short enough on ideas that I really did consider doing Hanukkah instead as I've threatened before in the past... except it came up even earlier than x'mas, which would have screwed me anyway. =p

How about you?  Now that you've claimed up and down that you've squeezed the last drop out of that particular line of ficlets, where are you going to find a new 'tradition'? =D

DAHling... Tomorrow is another day. I'll think about it TOMORROW. *grin*
I have not a clue. In fact, I usually don't until about November when I suddenly panic and start wondering where the year went. Some part of my head realizes that if I wrote something each month, and squirreled it away, I'd have twelve things. But... tomorrow, don't you know. December is just so far away....

I tell ya, a veggie theme wouldn't have been my first choice for inspiration, but the ideas weren't coming... =p

Fortunately for you, you also have a tradition of outsourcing a few of your days, so you don't need a full set of 12.  So you can afford to slack off for at least a few months... =)

These have been a lovely middle-of-the-night treat. ^___^ Don't suppose there might be another set? Say... 365 days of Gundam...? *hides under the bed*

Kidding! ^___^ Maybe.... There's plenty of veggies left.

How about you take the veggie challenge?  It could go viral or something. =)

That was a great ending ficlet! I really enjoyed reading all of them. It wouldn't be as nice a holiday season with some of your Heero/Duo romance thrown in. Thank you! *is looking forward to next Christmas*

Uh-oh, next Christmas? >_>' Well, I feel confident in saying I'm sure I can cough up something on an annual basis, but I won't guarantee what. ^^'

I wrote this one right after writing the first one about the pumpkin latte being kinda like their relationship... Had a neat coffee theme going for a second there. ^_^
