Two Doors Down : 2

"Hi, I'm Heero, I live two doors down.  I got all of your mail today by mistake."  He held it out.

"Oh, thanks."  The cutie almost-next-door accepted the stack.  'Duo Maxwell' was the only name on all of the mail, so there seemed a good chance that he lived alone.

"I'm sorry, but I opened your magazine.  That was before I noticed that none of this was addressed to me.  I used to have a subscription, so I assumed it was one of those free ones they give you once in a while, trying to win you back, if you know what I mean."

"Ah.  No prob."  Duo gave the magazine a cursory flip through its pages.  "Guess I'm lucky you didn't open it up and find, like, gay porn or something, eh?"

"Oh, I don't know.  I think it would have seemed pretty lucky to me if I had."

"Huh?"  Heero smiled at him, and something about that smile made him swallow hard.  He'd been off the market for a while, but he was pretty sure that was a come on.  Hell, that smile itself was a bit of a come on, wasn't it?  Guh, he needed to say something so he didn't accidentally come off as a homophobe or something, but he wasn't sure if he was ready to put himself back out there.

We don't have to go out there, a voice inside him said reasonably.  This guy came to us, in here.  If that's not a sign from the gods, I don't know what is.

"So."  He had to stop to clear his throat.  "You're, uh... from the colonies, too?" he concluded in a rush, waving the issue of Colonial Times.

"Yeah.  L1."

Duo declined to state his own colony of origin, mostly because there was a different voice inside his head singing Outta your league! in a really annoying way.  Oh, shut it, he thought back at it.  It wasn't as if he was standing there clutching a handful of past-due bills.

Damn straight! that first voice declared, trying to drown out that other voice that sounded rather like his ex's.

It was succeeding, but only partially.  No, what was really doing it for him was that smile.  That smile that seemed to be saying, I think you're cute.  Talk to me?

Well, maybe the guy really was out of his league.  But he couldn't be so out of his league that Duo couldn't introduce himself.  With a sudden surge of resolve, he put on a smile of his own.  It was a little rusty, but it could serve to get things started.  "Hi.  I'm Duo."

Someday they'll have to give a gift to their mail carrier for delivering Duo's mail to the wrong place.

I like the idea behind this series, with them living two doors down from each other. It's sweet that the person you'll fall in love with can be that close to you already without you knowing it.

I've a feeling Heero would have found a way to introduce himself sooner or later. ^_^

I could only write 'hi my name is ___' so many times before I started feeling repetitive, so I branched out into variations on the two ____ down theme.  Wanted to throw some canon in there, too.

Opportunity knocks, holding a bundle of mail. ^__^ Nifty.

Duo, drown the voice of your ex in the eggnog.

I'd prefer him to drown the voice out in Heero's ____. (choose your own adventure.)

Oh, I like these.... different universes, so to speak, to a similar scenario. Love that Heero was the 'approacher' in this one. These two will just find their way to each other no matter what. ^_____^

Oh, I can think of all kinds of random ways for the guys to meet... Just can't always get them to say anything interesting to each other within the space of ficlet. =p
