Two Sheets to the Wind : 4

The nurse pulled the rubber out of her basket, the squeezy ball, some vials, a needle.  "Oops, no alcohol swabs.  Be right back."

Duo waited until she'd gone into the other room before hurrumphing.  "Oh, come on, I want my breakfast.  Their needles are sterile, aren't they?"

"Just let the medical professional do her job," Heero advised blandly.  He was fairly certain Duo had told him the same thing two or three times in the past.  And besides, it was probably important for them to stay on the good side of the nurses of the infirmary downstairs.  Chances were, they'd be seeing them again some time, and not just for their annual check-ups.

"Back in my day," Duo warbled in a faux querulous voice.  "We stuck people with needles without no fancy an-ti-sep-tic all the time, and no one ever --"  Fuck, that wasn't true.  Wasn't true in the slightest.  Was completely and blatantly not true at all.  They hadn't died due to lack of sterilization, but they had all died all the same.

Heero took his hand and squeezed, and Duo drew in a shuddering breath.  Out.  In.  Out.

"The team on seven is doing some sort of fitness challenge this quarter," Heero said calmly.  "There will likely still be some good stuff leftover there."

In.  Out.  Breakfast.  Right.  "Oh yeah, read something 'bout that on the intranet.  Can't let their pastries go to waste, can we?"

"And we can stop by ten on the way back up for the good coffee."

In.  Out.  "Sounds like a plan."  In.  Out.  "Heh, I've got you trained pretty good, don't I?"

"I've learned a few things," he answered modestly, squeezing Duo's hand again.

So... is Duo having a few flashbacks or is he afraid of needles? I once saw a grown man faint at the sight of one.

Loving it.

I didn't think 'flashback' so much as the sudden and unexpected association simply delivered him a swift punch to the gut.  Amounts to the same thing, though.

Poor Duo. He's never going to totally escape from his past, is he? Luckily, Heero knew just what to do.

I think Duo is fairly okay with his past, except when it just poops on him out of the blue like this.  And then he gets into that little guilt circle of 'how could he forget'.

Everyone with PTSD should have a Heero to lean on now and then. ^_^

I'll take a Heero, even without PTSD.

I love when Duo surprises himself with his own thoughts. Is this one random, or does it fit into Haven? This pair has a Haveny feel.

...You can tell the difference between my Haven boys and the rest of them? O_o I thought they were all the same... >_>

It could be Haveny if you wanted it to.  That Duo is about as well-adjusted as could be expected, so I don't think he suffers from any crazy flashbacks or anything, but he does have those moments where he gets sucker-punched by his own thoughts and gets discombobulated.

Haven Heero is more... I dunno... Thinks Duo through? And Haven Duo makes these mental leaps that sometimes surprise Heero, and sometimes surprises himself.

Hmm.  I would say that my many incarnations of Duo all suffer the same malady, but Haven!Duo is all nicely balanced out by Haven!Heero so he has the ability to recognize when it happens and pull himself up short, as opposed to a few of my other stories, where Duo doesn't really realize that he's been blindsided by some insidious trauma and it makes him act in ways he doesn't understand himself.

I would say all of my Heeros think their Duos through, because Heero is a thinker and that's what he does, but Haven!Heero has more knowledge/experience to draw on?

Yeah, maybe that's it... Haven!Heero's just better at it somehow...

I wasn't too much a fan of the abrupt angsty turn the ficlet took (was not my intent at all!), but the boys salvaged it for me in the end.

LOL "trained you pretty good." Obviously. That's what the ultimate goal is, of course. ;D Also, annual physicals suck. Just the truth.

Sometimes I wish there were just a vending machine or something, I could just stick my arm in and order it to take my pulse, blood pressure, and blood, run these tests, and be done with it.
