fic - i backward cast my e'e part 8 [novella]
Title:  I Backward Cast My E'e
Part:  8
Notes:  A part shorter than I'm used to... but then I stop to remember that this is just a scene in a larger story, not a one fic-lite chapter like haven or something.  Must get head back into proper place...

Off-topic Notes:  When will people learn to stop IMing me while I'm trying to write?  Especially when I'm running late?

I Backward Cast My E'e
sequel-lite to for promis'd joy
Part 8

There was an itch on the tip of his nose that needed to be scratched, but the best he could do was wiggle it around a little and hope it didn't catch Duo's attention.  Since they were busy washing the dishes at the moment, his hands were otherwise occupied.  Hopefully it would keep until they were done.  Until then, perhaps a distraction was in order.  "Before I forget.  I know it's a still a little early, but Trowa invites us all over to his place for Thanksgiving."

Duo made a thinking face as he contemplated his mental calendar.  "It's not *that* early."

"Well, I know you don't like doing things *that* early in advance."  If he'd asked any earlier, Duo would have simply put off answering until later.  Though given Duo's state of mind lately, perhaps it would have been justified.

Howard called out from his seat on the sofa.  "His mom's a good cook, you said?"

"Absolutely."  She'd made sure he and Odin had had the skills they needed to more than simply survive on their own.

"We'll be there," Howard announced firmly.

Duo sighed dramatically.  "Howie..."

The older man turned in his seat to blink innocently at his nephew.  "What?"

A roll of the eyes was sufficient enough an answer.  He bumped his elbow unnecessarily against Heero's to catch his attention.  "Is it just the Bartons?  Or are any of the others home for Thanksgiving?"

"Mr. and Mrs. Barton, Trowa and Cathy, me and Odin, you and Howard.  Thanksgiving isn't a big deal in the Chang household, especially not big enough for him to fly home for three days.  I think Quatre's asserting his independence."  He tried not to sound too amused by that.  Hopefully this time around would be different from his high school effort, when Quatre had thought to do the same.  "He's not as far from home as Wufei is, but we're seniors now, with lives of our own, and he'll be attending a celebration with some of his college friends."

"What, they're more important than you guys?  Trowa?"

"He may not have another Thanksgiving with them, but we'll probably all have plenty more together."

Howard nodded sagely.  "Yes, good friends to last a lifetime.  Very important."

"Yeah?" Duo asked challengingly.  "And where are your life-long friends, hmm?"

"Hey, I got friends.  They're just more bohemian than most people's friends are."

"Otherwise saying, you all suck at keeping in touch."

"Not my fault I come from a generation that still believes in post cards."

Hiding a smile, Heero rinsed off the last dish and set it in the rack before drying his hands and stepping away from the sink.  Duo bailed back toward his work as soon as his job was finished, but Heero paused to survey the kitchen first to make sure all was in place.  Satisfied, he turned back to the others.  "Howard... of all your 'bohemian' friends... are you actually the responsible one?"

Howard puffed himself up proudly.  "Sure am."

Duo snorted and did nothing to hide his incredulous expression.

"Hey, don't give me that look."  Howard wagged his finger comically at his nephew.  "I managed to raise you up without leaving you locked in a car or losing you at the mall, didn't I?"

Duo twirled his finger in the air in a classic 'whoop-de-doo' gesture.  "I'd like to think that I..."  He trailed off abruptly, his brow slightly furrowed.

The other two exchanged quick glances.  Heero wandered a few steps closer to Duo's current workstation at the coffee table and leaned over the back of the sofa.

It took a few seconds and a couple of blinks, but Duo eventually registered his presence, which he acknowledged with a small, tight smile and a shake of his head.

Heero kept his concerned look steady, pure, and expectant.  Howard, for his part, was happy to leave this interrogation to an expert.

Inevitably, the uncomfortable squirming drove Duo to answer.  "...When I was five... well.  Can't say my very own mother never lost me at the store."

Heero was silent as he digested this information.  "How long?"

Duo shrugged uncomfortably.  "I dunno.  Five-year-olds don't always have the best grasp of time.  I was kicking it at the lost and found for a while, though, long enough to finish off that sucker they gave me."

"Oh, that's good.  I mean, that you weren't alone."  He couldn't summon up the mental image of a little deserted Duo, lost and teary, and he didn't want to.  "Who found you?"

"No one.  I wandered over there myself."

There was a hint of defiance in his voice.  What for, Heero didn't know, but it made him ask, "Before or after your mother lost you?"

"Ha ha."  Duo favored him with a sour smile.  "Maybe I should have kicked up more of a fuss.  Maybe that'd have kicked her into gear instead of just strolling up finally and picking me up like I'd just been with the sitter--"  He stopped himself mid-rant, but it looked like it took a bit of effort.  He took a deep breath, shut his eyes for a few seconds, shook his head.  "You know, it's history, Heero.  Just history."

In a pause during which Heero contemplated his response, Howard sallied forth with a mild tone.  "Never heard that story before."

"Yeah, well, what's there to say?  Maybe things would have been better if I'd stayed lost?"

A light crease immediately appeared on Heero's forehead.  "Duo..."

"Yeah, yeah, I know.  Shut up already, right?"

The furrow deepened.  "That wasn't what I was going to say."

"Yeah?  Then what incredibly wise and patient words did you have in mind?"  The annoyed look on Duo's face persisted for a few seconds before it faded into a grimace, and then a sigh.  His eyes dropped to his work on the table top in front of him.  "Sorry."

Heero echoed the sigh, but softly enough that Duo couldn't hear.  After a few breaths and a glance to Howard, Heero made his way over and sat down on the floor next to Duo.  Their knees bumped lightly against each other.

Duo let out a loud breath and tipped over enough so their shoulders could touch.  "Man, this sucks."

I love how Howard had learned to leave it to Heero. Love their interactions, funny or serious.

I think Heero would be happier if Howard would take back some of the responsibility, though!  It can get tiring trying to keep up with Duo. =)

man, i think duo has it right... it does suck. but, it needs to be done?

nice addition, and thanksgiving with the bartons! i like heero's little mental snicker at quatre 'asserting his independence... again'. :)

thank you for writing!

Yeah, it was about time that someone cracked.  Heero refused to do it, so I guess it was Duo.  Sucks to be him, but it's okay, because he's got a Heero and a Howard to snuggle him back to happiness. <3

My Quatre's gotten more and more 'independent' ever since I wrote Touch the World. =D

btw, check out this :) i hope you like it.

Man, is it sad that I had to go back to re-read the fic first before I really connected with the pic? ^^' Hard to keep all these fics straight sometimes...

Anyway.  Whee, gift art!  You shouldn't have!  I shall squish it and give it a good home!  (not to be uppity, but i assume i may give it a good home?)

*sprinkles chocolate kisses for everyone*

Sounds like Howard may have been the responsible one in the family too. O.o

At least Duo got a sucker out of it.... Poor baby. >_>

Having Howard and now Heero, must really highlight how bad his parents were. No one wants to see that, even if they are an adult. *pets the duo*

To be fair, we haven't seen anyone on Duo's mother's side of the family, other than Howard. =) Though I guess no one else jumped in to save Duo when he was young and unwanted... ;_;

I don't think Duo's ever been under the illusion that his parents weren't bad. -_- He's just been successful in convincing himself that they were merely the people who gave him life, and nothing more.
lavendarlizard From: lavendarlizard Date: August 25th, 2008 11:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Howie being the one to step up, even though he wasn't really around much, kind of says it. O.O

All the more reason for not liking to remember the moments leading up to that conclusion. O.o

Um... The hippie mother isn't going to show up, is she? Cuz if she is, I need to stock up on rotten tomatoes. =(

...Ha.  Now there's something I've never considered before.  Thanks, but no thanks.  I think I'll pass on that one.  =)

Poor Duo.  I remember specifically choosing his age at their divorce to make sure he'd be old enough and young enough to be horrifically traumatized by his parents. -_- *snuggles the duo*

Oh, good. ^___^ It seems to be easier to find E coli tomatoes than rotten ones these days... ^.o Don't really want to make my own. O.o

How long did it take for Duo to believe that Howie wasn't going to leave or dump him somewhere? Couple of years? O.O *pets the snugglee*

*koff* What makes you think Duo believes that yet?  >_>  Remember last year, when he flipped out over winter break after Howie gave him a cell phone?

When Howie took him in, he was determined to do everything in his power to make Howie not want to give him back.  This meant more than being merely well-behaved.  He was also determined to be Howie's buddy and Howie's right hand man with the market (since Howie was pretty much on his own in both respects).  But as he got closer to Heero, he felt he was not filling those two roles very well any more, which made him suddenly fearful that Howie wouldn't want him any more, which made him distance himself from Heero.  Between Howie and Heero, Howie was the much safer bet.  He already had Howie all figured out.  In his adult brain, he knows that Howie's love is unconditional, but in the corner of his heart that still belongs to his inner kid, the fear still lingers.

And then his adult brain explained the whole response away as simply being afraid of losing that close relationship that he has with his uncle.

Hello there!  Yay, gift art!  Merith has had chocolate kisses sprinkled in her direction, and now it is your turn. ^_^

The first thing I notice is Duo, dressing down so provocatively while still at work!  Naughty boy. =) And is that a picture of Heero pinned to his bulletin board?  Way to be stealthy! ^o^ And those chocolate kisses themselves are just so adorable. <3

My thanks for this and for accommodating Merith's whims! ^_^ May you enjoy some of my other work.

Too lazy to log in...

This totally made me think of my family, but in a good way. My brother and I were little shits when we were kids. Anytime my mom would take us to a bigish store we had this game, it didnt have a name but it was basically run away from mom and see if we can find her again later.... Originally we were to good at it and were at the lost and found often but by the time I was oh Id say 7 I could ditch my mom in costco and still find her again lol
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: August 26th, 2008 01:08 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm significantly more than seven, but I'm still not very good at finding my mother in Costco after I've lost her. =D

Oh man... poor Duo, it sucks to be cranky, KNOW you're being cranky, and not really be able to do anything about it.
I love Howard in this series... he's so laid back! ^o^
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: August 26th, 2008 01:27 am (UTC) (Link)
BUT it's easier on everyone else because it saves them the trouble of having to tell him he's being an ass. =)

Let's just say it may have been Howard's pot-smoking ways that made him the black sheep of the family. ^o^

Re: i backward cast my e'e

I don't believe I have a record of not continuing what I've started.  I do not intend to start such a record.  It may simply be continued at a time of my own choosing.  It gets written when it's ready to get written.
