fun fact! - the turnip patch

fun fact!
*waves good-bye to vacation* ;_;

Anyway.  Fun fact for the week:  I've noticed that I have unintentionally placed Haven more or less on the west coast of the United States.  The drinking age is 21, and they witnessed the sun setting over the ocean that time they visited the beach.

I have no desire to pin Haven to the west coast of the United States, but oh well.  Not gonna bother changing it now.  But Haven was always supposed to be located 'over there'. *vague handwave*

I find it far more amusing that the boys would not be able to drink legally yet, anyway, and I'm sure sunset on the sands sounded quite romantic-ish at the time. =p

I always thought the east coast for some reason. Not that I'd know the difference. I'm landlocked in a desert area >_>;

I always thought kind of east-ish, too.  Seemed a little too mellow for west coast.  Hm, actually I think it's always been a bit of a mishmash in my head.  Well, maybe the US has just changed by AC195. =)

Could be the Gulf too, but I can't imagine the boys in Texas... I just can't. Florida'd be amusing. I don't know why but it would.

California could be an island by AC195 and the Rockies the height of Everest. Wonder what that'd do to the rest of the continent.

If they were in Florida, they could run into Howard. ^o^ I dunno, that seems a little too retire-y to me.

I guess it's equally as possible that other countries out there all decided to raise their legal drinking ages. *shrug*

Poor knowledge of the US landscape on my part basically had me imagining it... *waves hand* over there somewhere too. Though not too far South, since nobody had a funny accent in my mind. haha

What amuses me is that you noticed this after years and years of having written the chapter.
And don't worry, I'm sure Ms. Suzuhara legally buys them alcohol when they need it. XD; To be honest, I don't see either of them as drinkers really. So it shouldn't be a problem. It'd probably just elicit one of those "huh, oh yeah, normal people our age make a big deal out of this". And Duo had beer with the Sweepers anyway.

Well, 'south' on the Pacific coast would be today's generic American accent since that's where Hollywood is, and it's the Hollywood, southern Californian accent that is the world's perception of the 'American' accent these days. =)

Actually, though, in my head, Heero and Duo naturally have L1 and L2 accents, respectively.  I think they both would have been trained to speak in the generic accent, though, for fitting-in purposes, but now that the war is over, it doesn't matter if people can identify them, so they slip up now and again when they aren't paying attention.

I don't see them as drinkers, per se... except for that one amusing Quatre episode over x'mas, which got it into Duo's head.  ^o^  No, I don't think Duo would make a hobby of drinking, but I think he really would like to be the one to get Heero drunk one day.  ^__^  Unfortunately, he can't do it legally for a few more years yet!

Hey, it could be florida, couldn't it?

Wherever they are, Haven rocks. Although I always thought it was in New England ish.

I wondered about Florida... well, actually Florida never occurred to me until people mentioned it.  Possibly because I think Howard when I think Florida, not Haven.  ^^'  But I thought something peninsula-like farther up the coast, something vaguely Cape Cod-like, and thought that wouldn't work because then you'd be able to see land on the other side and I think they couldn't?  I wonder if you can see land on the other side from Florida...

Some of us appreciate a west coast location now and then. ^____^

Lately, this west coast location has actually had a winter season and everything!  So now that it's not so distinct a location anymore, it could very well serve as a vague-handwave kind of location. =)

The west coast does have winter - sometimes; you just have to go north to find it. ^___^

It's been bloody cold lately!  Well, not like super lately, but lately all the same.  I think I've found it just fine!  (not that i'm not north of you. ^_^)

Cold here, too; the cats have begun serving their intended purpose of foot-warming at night. ^___^

I wonder how toasty a Bengal Tiger gets? O.o

Inside or outside of its stomach?

Wouldn't he be a wonderful winter body pillow? ^_____^

Outside of his stomach. ^.o

I can't remember if you ever set a legal age limit on alcohol... Perhaps all the world has gone like Japan and the age limit is 20?

I never really thought of it in terms of the US since so much has changed by then. I always thought of it as in another country that was vaguely English/American in nature. I wonder how much continental drift has changed the Earth in that timeline? (How far in the future is AC1##?)
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: January 5th, 2009 11:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hm, I'm not sure if I said the legal age was 21 or not, but I do know I've said the boys aren't legal yet, and they're eighteen going on nineteen.

I've never thought of it as the US per se... but it does have to be far enough away from Brussels and the rest of the traditional seats of power over there that they feel sufficiently distanced from all that.  The US is just the typical 'across the pond' place from Europe.  Perhaps I just lack imagination. =)

Popular theory was, I think, that Gundam years started counting from the year 2000.  But I think that applies more to the other Gundam timelines.  Seems to me that, since AC stands for After Colony, that it would have to start counting from the year that man put colonies into space, which would be significantly after the year 2000.

I think there are a few East Coast beaches that face west, being on peninsulas or something, but since there is also a Ms. Suzuhara living there, I usually imagine Haven to be anywhere from San Jose to Seattle.
In addition, I like to think of GW as taking place in a universe that is an AU to our own timeline, rather than in the distant future. But even if it were, say 500 years in the future, geologic change is so slow that (even with global warming changing the coastlines) the basic shape of the US would still be apparent. But the changes in society would be significant.
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: January 6th, 2009 12:07 am (UTC) (Link)
I considered west-facing beaches on the East Coast, but wondered if you wouldn't be able to see land on the other side of the ocean, then?  I don't recall whether or not I ever specified that the sun was setting over the ocean and only over the ocean, though... maybe it doesn't matter, then. =)

I hope that in the future, a Ms. Suzuhara can live anywhere she darn well pleases. =)

I've always thought of Haven as a place like Sanq.  Like, it doesn't really exist in a world that we know today, but it's out there somewhere, exactly where it needs to be. ^_^
sunhawk16 From: sunhawk16 Date: January 6th, 2009 12:41 am (UTC) (Link)
Maybe it was more like a sunset reflected in an easterly ocean? Uh... yeah. >_>
turnippatch From: turnippatch Date: January 6th, 2009 01:36 am (UTC) (Link)
After doing some research, it would appear that I wrote that the sun was kissing the horizon, soon to bleed out all over the ocean.  I suppose it's possible that the western shore of an eastern coast was visible there as well?

...And now that I think about it... aren't spectacularly orange sunsets caused by plenty of air pollution?  So that means in AC195+, the air is still super polluted?  Oh noes!  I've written them into a world where they're not only stuck on the west coast of the States, but we totally failed at the whole greenhouse gases things!  *facepalm*

Or... uhm... volcanic activity? >_>
